Hear the author talk

I used to bring my daughter to the park in this photo and ride on the carousel with her, but now my daughter is too old for the kiddie ride and tiny chairs. We recently we walked past this place on our way to an author's lecture.

This school year, I started taking my daughter to hear authors talk about their books and craft. To me, attending the lectures fits the Charlotte Mason style of learning because the authors are truly passionate about their subject matter and about the art of writing. The conversations at the events are not long, dry textbooky talks, but engaging and informative - and oftentimes funny and always short. Plus, I like spending an evening away from home with my daughter.

After this particular lecture, she and I talked about what we liked and didn't like about the event, narrating to each other on the crowded subway car.

Our narrations veered off on tangents, and we compared what the author said about writing to other art forms, we compared what she said about characters to characters in books we recently read, we talked about how the act of writing helps you formulate your ideas, and we talked about how the chairs in the lecture hall were uncomfortable.

  4. What a wonderful thing you are doing with your daughter. This is definitely the way to live and raise our children. They live in the real world with us and you treat them with respect and value their ideas about this real world that we're journeying through together.

You're making me miss the city where a person can find so much to do without having to get in the car. We are a one vehicle family right now and my son and I spend too much time inside.

Your daughter is blessed. Here's hoping she knows that.

  5. Kay, One of my favorite days after moving here was when we sold our car. I've never missed the vehicle...except two or three times every week when carrying home groceries in my backpack.

  6. On my first grocery trip after moving to NYC I loaded up the cart like I was shopping back in the south. And then as I'm checking out I ask myself, How am I going to get all this home? I've forgotten what the solution was, but I did learn the lesson about how to shop several times a week.

My first NYC home was 80th and Riverside. Loved it there.
