Homeschooling merry-go-round

A couple of years ago, I jumped on the merry-go-round of hectic homeschool scheduling, going in circles during our week, making the rounds from one organized activity to another.

Our lives sped up faster and faster to meet each outside commitment (while neglecting commitments to ourselves), but we never seemed to reach the destination. And what was the destination anyway? It felt like the whole point of the hectic homeschooling schedule was to have a hectic schedule.

I noticed homeschooling moms on the merry-go-round greeted each other with, "I'm sooooo tired," and then they sighed. I didn't like it, but I picked up that habit.

It took another year, last year, to drop the habit and untangle the messy feeling from that merry-go-round year. It took awhile to set everything in order again, to find beginnings and endings and breaks in the day, to be at ease and anchored and restored with my own kind of energy.

There is an overabundance of activities to fill homeschoolers' days, but I don't want our days filled with activities here and there and everywhere. I don't want more and more and more just because more is available.

I want enough because, after all, enough is enough.

  1. This is the time of the year! It is so tempting to want to give our children every activity and event, but alas we do have to discern. Thanks for the reminder : )

  2. Grace'n: If sign up for one more thing this fall, I will have to start sleeping on the subway to get to them all, and I don't want to do that, lol.
    So many tempting classes!
